2000 Rover 25 loose wire from the battery

Car: Rover 25
Year: 2000
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Hi

Yesterday my car started and i drove it home. I knew there was something wrong and when i looked under the bonnet the wire from the battery was not connected to anything else. I think this is the earth wire and so I connected it to a bolt as I thought it would have to be something steel. The car started again. Howvever when I went to start it this morning it wouldnt start again. Again I checked under the bonnet and this wire was were I had put it previous. I disconnected it from the steel bolt that I had connected it to and the car started. I am totally confused! Can anyone tell me where this wire is supposed to be
