2000 Rover 25 faulty thermostat?

Year: 2000
Variant: 1.6 IS

After driving for a while with heater on,temp gauge rises to max and blows cold air then returns to normal,blowing hot air.Could it be a faulty thermostat or temp sensor?Cooling fan is working ok. Or head gasket?

It could well be any of the things you`ve mentioned. These cars are renouned for head gaskets going. If you do have the head done, make sure you fit the upgraded gasket and change the thermostat anyway
