2000 Rover 25 loosing power in 2nd

Car: Rover 25

Variant: 1.4 IS manual
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
hi i just bought this rover 25 last week and I'm having a small problem in 2nd gear...
that car starts fine and drives in 1st gear okay but when I'm in 2nd gear it looses power randomly i have no response from the accelerator at all some times just for a second then it picks back up and sometimes it goes completely and have to turn the car off and start it again. its my first car so I'm just a bit unsure what it could be... any ideas?

well so far i have changed the spark plugs and put fresh oil in and it still does the same thing but at really random times it has done it first thing in the morning then been fine all day and other times it has been fine all day and i pull up somewhere and when i set off again it looses power no response from the accelerator at all so i have to pull over and turn the engine off and on a few times and then it seems fine... also today it hasn't done it at all but driving home from school the exhaust started sounding like I'm driving a sports car like a deep muffled sound any ideas on what could be causing this?
