1998 Rover 200 noise coming from the car

Car: Rover 200
Year: 1998
Variant: 1.4
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
Hi can you help I have a strange noise that is coming from my car? When accelerating a noise appears from behind the dash it sounds like a pumping noise. The noise does not happen all of the time it is intermittent and just appears every now and then. The noise can sometime happen 3 or 4 times in a row. My partner said that someone told him this could be the gear box or drive shaft going is this correct and is it a costly problem to resolve. Thank you for your help.

Hard to diagnose without hearing noise , but if a "pumping noise " it could be water boiling in radiator header tank as temp . increases prior to electric fan cutting in . Usually happens if stuck in traffic or moving slow , stop starting .Could check coolant level .Other possible causes if cooling system losing water and pressurising .

Hi sorry it could not be that as i recently had a new water fan cooler. It is when traveling at speed and sounds like a whirling sound. It just happens every now and then.
