1998 Rover 200 engine pinking

Car: Rover 200
Year: 1998
Variant: 216 Auto
Categories: Engine & Drivetrain
I have a problem with my rover 216. When the engine is under power there is excessive pinking, when not accelerating the engine sounds fine. My local garage says it has cleaned the crank sensor, but this has had no effect, it is almost as if the timing is too far advanced, and needs retarding. Any ideas please. The sound is getting frustrating now.

Might well be timing , belt could have jumped. When was belt last changed ? Could also check plug gaps , wouldn't help if too wide .

The belt for ths car was changed about 3 years ago, or about 4000 miles. This was done when the head gasket went. When re-built all was well, it just seems to be over the last few months or so. Will check the gaps, and narrow them a bit. If not might check the belt, and move it a notch, see if this helps. Many thanks.
