1998 Rover 200 speedo & odometer not working

My Speedo and Odometer have packed in with no prior warning.
When rattling the millions of wires though, they will occassionally work for a few seconds then pack in again.
I can't really get behind the speedo, etc as it seems that the whole dash has to come out.

it does sound like a bad wire connection some where that need locating but i cant picture why you need to remove the dash board to get to the wires but also check if you can the wire linking to the pick up on the transmission
