2005 Renault Megane loss of power

Car starts to spasmodically lose power on lengthy trips in excess 100km. Seems to miss then loses power. Problem gets progressively worse. Have to stop when total loss of power. Turn engine off and wait a while can then drive a short distance until problem recurs, Car will not hold revs when problem presents almost like running out of petrol. Problem sometimes seems to self correct after a time. Car does not present problem when start in mornings only after long trip. Not catalytic converter as this has been fixed.

You dont say what engine is in car ? Petrol / diesel ?

This would be good to know as i have the exact same problem, mine is a 1.6 53plate. the whole car has been practically rebuilt with problem after problem but this one i can't seem to fix!

Any suggestions my mechanic keeps saying it is the downstream sensor??
