Diesel fumes in car and not running smooth

My mums car is emitting diesel fumes inside the car and doesn't seem to be ticking over smoothly. No loss of power, but recently had a turbo control valve fitted - any ideas??

Well with the idle speed fluctuation I'd suspect the EGR valve,
which is not unusual on these engines.
It might clean but I'd say it isn't a DIY JOB.
