1997 Renault Megane automatic transmission drives in 3rd gear

automatic transmission put it in drive sometimes starts in 1st. two seconds later goes straigt into 3rd gear. move gear stick up and down. make no difference stays in 3rd gear please help.

check the automatic transmission oil level and top up if required but this can only be checked while the engine is running otherwise you will get false readings
