1997 Renault Megane bad starter when cold

I've juxt bought A Renault Magane RT 1.6 Classic to drive to work and have found that it has a problem starting when cold.
Once started the car restarts fine. Also the car judders occasionally when driving as if the engine isn't getting enough fuel? Any ideas?
