2003 Renault Megane not starting

Hi I hope someone can help me with my problem i'm having with my renault megane 2003.
I was driving and next minute the car started to make a knocking and grinding sound, then I took the car out of gear and the car cut out immediately. The car did not want to start after that.
Any suggestions that i should look at to help me find the problem.

Check oil and water level o.k first .If o.k , check dephaser pulley .
