1996 Renault Megane fuel warning light stays on all the time

My fuel warning light will not go off. I was low on fuel for a while, then left the car unmoved for a few days and now, when put ~15 litters of fuel in it, the indicator shows that I have half a tank of fuel, but the low fuel warning lamp stays on.

Sometimes if you put more fuel in tank i.e fill up , it can clear / rectify fault .
