Leaking Sunroof

2004 Renault Clio 1.2
Car: Renault Clio

Variant: 1.2

I have a 2004 Renault clio 1.2 it has a leak in the sunroof and has started getting worse I was wondering if this is a common problem with clios of this age
Problem added: May 15, 2008 (15 years ago)
if the roof is gettin wet on the inside then it is the seal that joins the sunroof and the bodywork i had problems with it and i found just pushing loads of clear bathroom sealant under solves it as a tempory solution if it isnt that the check the tubes at the top of the sunfroof are clear, pour hot water but not quite boiling water down the tubes to unblock any mud sand or othe part if the water doesnt drain away the there is a blockage if that doesnt do it take the sunroof glass out and just clean the seal and make sure it is still flexible.

Hi, This is a known problem on all newwer shape Clio's. When i worked for Renault we pretty much replaced every sunroof in all the new Clio's. Call your local dealer to see if they have a suggestion with regard to any warranty situation.

BETTA WINDSCREENS CLIO 98/05
SUNROOF REPAIRS
Betta Windscreens Stockport Repairs to Renault Clio 98/05 Sunroof
Repair of a sunroof on a Renault clio can be carried out by anyone who likes a bit off a challenge
Tools Needed are ;
• one 10 mm
• ratchet spanner
• one sealer gun
• tube of silicone sealer clear or black is best one
• bottle of white sprit
• old rags to clean up
• glass cleaner
• latex gloves
• bog spreader/plastic card

Lets start, as sunroof fitters we are aware there is a big problem with the Sunroofs in clios so were going to help you fix it. Starting in the driver seat, open the handle on a manual roof, behind the handle you will see the joint in the trim which holds the headlining to the roof. Take hold of the trim by the joint, pull forward and remove the trim. Once the trim is removed the headlining can be pulled down slightly to reveal the 10mm bolts. The housing unit which contains the light is not fixed by screws and can just be pulled down in one complete unit. By holding the head lining down approximately 4 - 5 inches the 10mm ratchet spanner can be used to remove the bolts which hold the lower frame to the upper frame. Once all bolts are removed the sunroof drain pipes which are located in the 2 front corners need to be pushed forward to separate them from the sunroof frame. Once this is achieved the sunroof can now be lifted out starting from the back. Once the sunroof has been removed from the vehicle glass side down you will find that the roof was fitted with a damning tape from the factory, once you have found this you have now found the problem. Remove the damning tape with a flat headed screw driver. Clean the back with white spirits, wait for the spirit to evaporate. Whilst the spirit is evaporating the roof needs to be cleaned any damning tape which is stuck to the roof should be removed. Once dry then we can apply the silicone sealer to the upper frame of the sunroof. Don’t be shy when applying sealant i recommend going round twice. Using a pair of latex gloves pick up the sunroof and replace into position make sure that the sunroof is sat correctly remove gloves enter the car and begin to replace the 10mm bolts. Once all bolts are fully tightened the pipes which are located at the front can be reconnected. The headlining trim can now be put back and the interior light calving can now be pushed back into position. From the outside of the vehicle all excess sealer can be removed with a bog spreader or a plastic card. Do not use a metal scraper as this can scratch the roof. Once excess sealer has been removed using a rag and white spirit clean off the remainder the sealer once this has been achieved spray glass cleaner on glass and paint work and polish up. Job well done.
NOTES
Do not carry out work on a warm day because by the time you have got all the bolts back into the sunroof the sealer will be semi set and this will be hard to remove.
If you are in the Stockport/Greater Manchester area and feel that you are unable to carry out this work we would be happy to carry out this work on your behalf. Price as follows;
Manual £85 + vat
Electric £105 + vat

My girlfriend has a Clio 1.2 on a 51 plate with a manuel sunroof. She has had a leak which pools in the front nearside headlinigs for some months. It has been in to the garage who replaced the rubber seal, however the problem continued. I scoured the internet to try and find a solution. Having read advice similar to 'Bettabob', I removed the entire sunroof, checked the draining tubes which run through the windscreen suports. They were clear. I then replaced the sunroof, with a generous amount of sealant between the metal of the roof itself and the plastic trough, in which the glass screen sits. However it still leaked !!! I then, removing the glass screen again, un screwed the two metal fixtures bolted to the glass that allow it to pivot.Again, having applied a generous amount of silocant sealer, I replaced the glass screen into the trough. It has been in for approx two weeks, during most of which, it has rained, and the car is totally dry !!!!!!!! Sometimes the hardest problems have the easiest solutions.
Let me know if you need a hand.

Do you have a leak in your Renault Clio????

We have the solution……

Renault Clio factory fitted sunroofs are very prone to leaking.
Here at CCS Windscreens Ltd, we repair all types of sunroofs and have been specialising in this for more than 30 years.
On average we do 2-3 Renault Clio sunroof's a month.

They leak in the older shape Clio up to 1998 R/S registration and these are normally the electric operated sunroofs but they also leak in the newer model 1998-2005 which normally have the pop-up manual operated sunroof.

The reason being is that they are of poor original fitment.
In-between the framework of the sunroof and the rubber seal they only put in a foam seal as opposed to sealing it with a watertight silicone sealer.
This foam seal over a period of time disintegrates and then the water leaks through to the interior of the car.

Our technicians would remove the complete roof from the vehicle, allowing total cleaning of parts, priming respective areas and refitting using a lifetime sealant.

Your sunroof may leak from the sun visors or the interior light....please also note that if your car has central locking the sensor is in this area, so it is advisable that you have the sunroof repaired sooner rather than later as this sensor will get damaged and your central locking will not work any longer so you will have to pay out more than necessary.
We have carried out hundreds of these repairs over the past 5 years and we have NEVER had a customer return with a problem.
This repair REALLY works....we guarantee that!!!
Please give us a call for a quote and if you need any questions answered - we are happy to say that we are a fraction of the price of the dealerships.

For a quote or to ask any questions please call on 01245 490590 or
FREEPHONE 0800 770 880.

Please note:-
Sometimes the rubber seal has also been badly damaged due to the foam seal not protecting it so you may need to replace this too. We keep in stock the older style rubber, but you would need to obtain the newer style from a Renault dealer.
But, most times we can just do the reseal without having to replace this.

Hi I followed the instructions on here and as a novice my son and I had all done in 3 hours but would advise more silicone than less as when we were done I expected it to squeeze out on to the roof but it didnt so we then put masking tape on the roof around the outside of the sunroof and then applied more sealer into the tiny gap between roof and rubber seal and just smoothed it in with my finger took of the tape off,job done and looks the job just waiting for lots of rain now hope its ok

I would advise taking a look at www.sunroofrepairs.co.uk. I have used them twice and they have been quick, reliable and very cheap in comparison to other mobile sunroof companies.

They specialise in this industry and apparently carry out on average 10 sunroof fixes a week which is a high volume. They also have a page on facebook where if you book through that you receive a cost discount. Think it is under Renault Clio Leaking Sunroofs on there.

This is a horrible problem but one that truly exists across the range and for piece of mind I have always left it to the professionals.

Hope this helps guys!!!!

I have followed your instructions but still have a leak, in a different place by the manual opening, could this be that the rubber seal was put back with the small holes to rear, should these go to front. Much obliged if you can help
