1998 Renault Clio speedo not working

these are electronic so there is no speedo wire and i would say that the speedo clocks are faulty if you brought the car from a trader then take it back as you should have warranty but failing that you could take it to the dealer and see if they can reprogramme it

there is a speedo pick up on your vehicle and it's located to the rear of the gearbox it is a three pin plug which is black in colour both the connector and the sensor play up at times but try to clean the connector first

Exactly the same as the problem I had. Speedo just kept stopping and starting of its own will. Turned out to be the speed sensor on the gearbox.

Cost about £25 from Renault Dealer. Located centrally behind the engine in the top of the gearbox. Remove the air filter to get a bit of room. It had a small heat shield clipped to the side to protect it from the exhaust, just pull this off. The sensor is a bit difficult to get off. it has two locating lugs which are accessible through two small holes on either side of the entry spigot. Use a couple of screwdrivers to depress them and pull up with your third hand? for £25 I felt it was better to try this first than taking into a garage. I was right.
