1998 Renault Clio speedo works when wants to.

The Speedo has started to stop and start when it feels like it, it konks out at any speed and does not kick in til well, it feels like really, my partner has cleaned the wires etc (i think thats what there are) from the engine to the speedo bay, but this has made no difference can someone help here,
