2004 Renault Clio sudden high revs leading to cutting out

Car: Renault Clio
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.2
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When the engine has warmed up (after about 10mins) the revs rise to about 3000 when idling, this prevents setting off (or acceleration if moving, leading to juddering). Can lead to the the car stalling. The revs can be reduced by turning the heater on full and cold. If left cold with no heater it has no effect; if hot on full it has no effect). Local garage looked at it, along with electrician, but could find no obvious cause. The car was bought new 5 and half years ago, still only 17,000 miles.

Save me typing an answer , this is a reply to someone with the same fault on their Clio from another site ,

The Idle speed is not being controlled properly. This could be the idle speed control unit, but I often find it’s a symptom of something else – I’ve known it to be caused by a faulty injector, sticking EGR valve or poor connection to the throttle position sensor, to name but a few. Take the car to a Renault dealer and ask them to connect their diagnostic equipment up – it will read the information stored and tell you the fault. If you’re worried about main dealer prices, ask for a quote just for the diagnostic check – it should not take any more than 30 minutes.
