as i pulled of my drive i put it in reverse then back in first and back in reverse, as i went to put it back into first to set of ther was no first gear or any other other than 5th, its like ther is something blocking the entrence to the gears.

Sounds as if the gear stick has jumped the gate stop for whatever reason .

what does that mean, new gear box?

No , sounds like external fault on linkage / cables . Not sure of set up on that model / year. Usually gear stick has a stop which you have to lift gear stick to clear when selecting reverse . Sometimes just a case of refitting stick in right position , but occasionally something breaks . Should be easy for garage to see cause of fault .
