Hesitant when taking up drive 2002 Renault Avantime V6 Auto
2 or 3 second delay before 'D' takes effect. This can be after first selecting the gear, or after stopping at junction/traffic lights etc. In this scenario can actually feel gear disengage after stopping for a few seconds or more. Letting foot off brake seems to spur re engagement, but can be with a horrible thud if you forgot to wait before accelerating!!
This is my second Avi auto and the last one didn't do it.
Hmm seems to be quite widespread then. Many thanks.

In an effort to improve fuel economy the SU2 gearbox has a fairly unique "clutch" system fitted. This disconnects drive whilst the brakes are applied at a standstill. When you release the brakes the clutch engages and applying the accelerator allows you to pull away. The problems you report arrise when the clutch actuator sticks and takes longer than normal to engage the clutch. If during this time you accelerate before the clutch engages the result can be a fairly severe jolt. One of my Avantimes suffers with this problem but the other doesn't. It is best practice to get into the habit of feeling for the clutch to engage before you accelerate. Other than this there is no quick or cheap fix. None of the 260 members of the UK Avantime owners club have reported any long term effects due to this problem. Probably best just to live with it.
