2001 Pontiac Grand Am won't turn over or start

when trying to crank the engine the car does nothing. When cranking it while giving a little gas the engine revs up and a black/dark colored smoke comes from the exhaust. The engine will rev up and continue to do so as long as you apply gas, but once you stop giving it gas, the whole car stalls out.
