2004 Peugeot 807 battery charging fault

Yesterday the car flashed up with 'battery charge fault' whilst sitting in traffic then when i moved it went out but turbo didnt cut in only showed the once then this morning it the car wouldnt start is this a battery or alternator fault as dont have the voltmeter to check or is there another way of checking of the error

Really need to check alternator output as a start off point .
