Hi there, This could be a few thing, check that the rack is fixed to the car in the correct way. If you can see this inside the engine bay, get someone to turn the steering wheel, observe the rack which should have only a small amount of movement side to side. These are mounted on rubbers to allow for this. Also check all steering joints, these are top and bottom ball joints ( best to check these with the car jacked up) and check track rod ends to while your there, these should have no play in them. Check for play in the steering universal joints to.

It may be you steering rack at fault to, I’m not a hydraulic expert, but there are all sorts of seal inside and if one of these was to fail might cause you this problem.

Hope this helps and good luck

hi redrobin
good sound advice from other member, how are you on car repairs. if ok then try this ( if u/s then get a mechanic friend to do it for you ) once you've established free play is definitely in the rack. remove the gaiter & inside you will find a large nut, with i believe a lock tab. tap the lock tab down & give the nut a quarter to half turn, depending on amount of free play it may need more, but no more than a whole turn & a half. do adjustments in small increments at a time untill free play is eliminated.DON'T FORGET TO RESET LOCK TAB, if relevant. good luck, let me know how you get on. regards dj dave.

hi there redrobin,
i also have a 806 2.0 gtx on a 2000 w reg.
i have the same problem with the car pulling around the road when i go over bumps.
when stationary and i wiggle the steering wheel vigarously there is alot of clunking and knocking coming from the steering rack i think.
i was just wondering if you found any solutions to your problem.
