Hello Brian
Yes its a good idea about getting the fault codes read, but this may not reveal the fault especially if the engine warning light is not coming on.
A common fault on these engines as they get a few miles on the clock is a poor connection onto the MAP sensor which will give the symptoms you have got.
To check to see if this is the fault is quite easy, locate the sensor by putting you hand under the bottom of the inlet manifold and the sensor is there in the centre facing rearwards towards the engine.
With the engine running wriggle the connection plug and wiring and note if the engine speed changes splutters or varies, if so you will require a new sensor and connecting plug.
Hope this might be of some help.
Good luck.
