Your problem sounds interesting. The black smoke would suggest an over fuelling issue.

There is an engine temperature sensor that tells the engine ECU the current temperature of the engine. These sometimes develop an intermittant internal fault and effectively tell the ecu that the engine is cold.

Just for into there are usually two sensors for engine temp, one is blue in colour and is for the temperature guage, the other is normally black and has two connections...this is for the ECU.

For the cost of this I would suggest you fit a replacement in order to rule it out.

The only other issue I can think of is a turbo problem. The turbo waste gate may be jamming open causing a lack of turbo pressure. this could also lead to a loss of power and black smoke but you would also tend to hear a Whooshing sound when you try to rev the engine.
