Loss of power while driving

1997 Peugeot 406 2.0 glx estate petrol manual
Car: Peugeot 406
Year: 1997
Variant: 2.0 glx estate petrol manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
while driving on the motorway about 70 mph the car lost all power and stopped. i managed to get to the hard shoulder and tried to restart it. it ran very very roughly then died again. no smoke no noise. it wouldnt restart for about an hour then ran fine for 16 miles and the process began again. i had to put it on a low loader to get home. it runs ok on short journeys but the distance decreases over time. each time i drain the battery trying to restart it. i have now stopped using it but my partner is nearly 8 months pregnant so need a fix asap. and a cheap one at that. PLEASE HELP. THANKYOU

two things come to mind most likly is the coil pack when it gets hot it breaks down when it cools it works again.
the second is the crank angle sensor exactly the same when cools can restart ok
best way to check when fault occurs use a scanner and see if there is a rpm signal if yes its the coil pack if no its the crank sensor.
no good checking for a spark as it needs both to produce a spark
