2000 Peugeot 406 car revs up everytime i start the engine

Recently my car battery went flat after charging the battery and starting the car it now revs up straight away and I have to switch the engine off. Before the battery went flat the car was fine whats wrong with my car please help

We have a diesel Peugeot 406 and intermitently it will revs the engine. It makes you sound like a boy racer. It's pretty annoying. You can drive it say 6 times and it's fine and then you take the car out it starts revving - if you are out of town then if you just keep gently driving it it suddenly stops. It does it mostly around town.
Has anyone got any ideas why it would do it?
