1998 Peugeot 406 fault codes needle lift lost

After breaking down on micheal owens drive way yesteray the AA fitted a new fan belt that had snapped now there is a knocking sound and the engine light is on at low revs its smokes alot more than it did and two faults are showing > Needle lift lost and regulation of advance any ideas ?

Update: I was driving along today and it went really loud like a tractor like it lost a valve or something and then it went ok again? Sounded a bit cammy? engine light is on maybe needle lift lost is cus ive lost a valve? Any ideas???
