Unstable idling and revs

1999 Peugeot 406 1.8 MT petrol 16V UK
Car: Peugeot 406
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.8 MT petrol 16V UK
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi
The car is exploding on starting and produces a whirring sound. It slowly switches off on idling. Sometimes it switches off on releasing accelerator eg stopping at a robot. The whirring sound eventually dissapears in 10 mins. When in motion it jerks with a clicking sound and revs high. Sometimes it just revs without stepping on accelerator. U sometimes step on the eccelerator and it does nt respond, it may switch off or ma delay esp just after starting. Changed pump, filters, cleaned throttle, changed stepper motor. What cld it be?

I'm concerned the starter motor is continuing to spin over even when the engine is running.
Check by putting your hand on the starter to feel if it's hot.
CAREFULLY! as it could be very hot.

Ok. Thanks wl do that. Is it the issue that may be causing the switching off on idling too?
