Air con not working continually

2004 Peugeot 406 406 S HDI (90) manual.

My 2004 406 S, HDI (90) has a small problem with the air con. I had the car re-gassed and checked for leaks just over 2 years ago. Seemed to be working ok, nice and cold, but a lot of the times even though I have pressed the aircon switch on the dashboard, when I look under the bonnet at the end of the compressor, I can see that the middle of the compressor pulley, that shoud be spinning round. is in fact stationary. Sometimes if I give the switch a couple of quick presses,, i can hear the compressor cut in and looking at the compressor pulley, I can see that the centre is now spinning, and the aircon pipework is really cold. But very often as I am watching the spinning pulley, it will suddenly stop and the pipework gets warm again. Could this possibly be a faulty dashboard switch.or something more serious??? Can anyone advise me what do do to avoid being ripped off.

its working perfectly normally .
The compressor will cut out when the pressure sensor sees about 17bar.
When the pressure drops the compressor will cut back in.
If it is happening in quick succession then there may be a fault , I take it the fans are cutting in normally

Thank you for your prompt response. When you say are the fans working, do you mean the fans in front of the radiator, which I believe are electric fans which usually cut in when the engine reaches a certain temperature. To be honest I have not looked at that. I am 76 years old and know a bit about cars but not much about air con. Would you suggest I take it to an air con specialist for checking out????

The cutting in and out of the compressor drive pulley is sometimes after only a few seconds of running, other times it seems to work perfectly ok. Could it be the pressure sensor perhaps. Thanks for your time. Anthony.

There are a number of reasons why the compressor may cut in or out. It could be that the system is a little low on gas due to a leak .The cooling fans should run on half speed and I suspect they are working as you haven't said your stop light is coming on.
If you are still concerned it may be an idea to have an A/C service just to make sure all is ok
