iv been having trouble with my peugeot 406 hdi 110, the problem being when you hold the revs at 2000 the engine hunts an this can also be felt when driving at 60 at 2000 revs engine hunts an surges, there is often a smell of exhaust fumes, i would be most gratful if someone could give me some ideas on what it can be an even a way to resolve this, many thanks chris

Is there any residue build up around the base of the injectors?
Because injector seat leaks can cause exhaust odour/gas to then enter the cabin.
or possibly a blocked up CAT/DPF.

sounds like an egr valve sticking
