2003 Peugeot 406 temp hand faulty

on my 03 406hd the temp hand usually stays around 90. lately the hand shoots up to near boiling then shoots back down to normal. the engine isnt overheatng. ths happens all the time. any ideas???

Check / replace temp sender unit...
