1998 Peugeot 406 ignition warning light

Hi, I have a Peugeot 406 hdi (no turbo) 1999 mk 1. I have an annoying (and so far, expensive, problem). I get the ignition Star warning light coming on every now and then (and the ABS light at the same time, which I'm told is normal). The car still runs OK except that it won't exceed 2000 revs when the light is on, which is apparently intended. I changed the fuel filter first, no difference. I took the car to a Peugeot garage and they used the diagnostic kit - this said that the fuel pressure sensor not functioning properly. So I bought the sensor in the garage (130 euros!) changed it and it was fine for an hour - then the same problem again. Back to the garage again and they told me it would be a long job of sorting out a probable electrical fault - very expensive for an £800 car. Are there things I could try before I go down that route? What things are not likeley to be the cause, eg fuel pump?

This definitely sounds like an electrical problem and do not go down that route as your garage told you. Get an independent car electrician as you pay a fraction of the cost and they are hired in by brand name garages anyway for complex problems like this. It is only complex for the brand name garage. I have had a similar problem and was told by the brand name garage that it would cost a minimum of £1000 to have it sorted out and possibly more. I was convinced in my case it was just a faulty relay (and no need to rewire the whole car and get a new fuse box) and got an independent car electrician in who fixed it for £50 and it was the relay. I am not sure what is wrong in your case but do take my advice and save yourself a lot of money! Best of luck!
