1998 Peugeot 406 clutch pedal has gone stiff and there is a smell of burning

Just stopped driving and pressing the clutch pedal down it felt as if I was pushing through corn flakes. Smell like burning from the engine compartment.

Sounds like burnt out clutch .

Yes i was afraid of that. The car is 40 miles from home and I was hoping to be able to limp back but that may not be possible.

You could end up stuck at the side of road with no drive at all .Best to try and get it lifted as 40 mls is a long tow .Either that or get it repaired in some garage where it is now and save a recovery charge .

yes sounds like clutch has gone they suffer with the thrust bearings failing and clutch release fingers breaking as well,burning smell will be the clutch linings burnt
