2002 Peugeot 404 intermittent loss of power accompanied by burning smell.

Car: Peugeot 404
Year: 2002
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Have had an LDV pilot panel van from the post office for about a year now. After a service about 6 months ago the van has had episodes when there was an acrid burning smell and power progressively fades away.
After leaving the engine switched off for even a few minutes the van runs normally again.
Initially it was happening every few months but is now happening almost every time I use it, most commonly after about 15 minuetes of starting up.
I've had it serviced agin a few days ago, had a new thermostat fitted and replaced the temperature gauge which previously was not working. It happened again today. Unexpectidly the temperature gauge did not indicate that it was overheating.
Any body got any ideas?

all that i will say to that one is get the vehicle to the nearest garage for inspection as this can be serious and not be ignored
