Hello Im Jock an old disabled grunter, who at moment is stranded ,"Car less",I live 5 mile from nearest town,i attend hospital weekly but now cant so thats how important my car is,took it for MOT on 18th feb, failed on various minor things, couldnt find a garage to do repairs all busy or just not interested impression given by one so called mechanic, anyway 23rd Feb took to garage in town by AA relay, after spending threehundred pound, missing the date to return for first MOT they had to fail another one,so now its 11th march and they tell me they couldnt get emissions low and it needs a new cat converter, so i agree to pay another two fifty that was put on and guess what now Im told still wont lower enough,, so now I have a peugeot 309 and a £550 bill and still no MOT..they suggest its an engine problem with backpressure and can put sealant in cylinders to fix problem.as you will understand im at wits end and savings all gone and still stranded.
Looking for suggestions what do I do now

You say it failed for minor things ,did they not fail car originally for emmisions ? Did you go back to the same garage who failed car after getting the faults they listed rectified ? If car hasn't been used much , a good fast run to clear the cobwebs sometimes works wonders .If they say there is back pressure , have they checked engine breathing system ? i.e any crankcase breather / hoses / oil filler cap which is common cause of back pressure . Did they not notice back pressure beforehand ? If that is all right and they say it's worn piston rings , you can get engine additives which are only about £5 to £10 from likes of Halfords or accessory shops .Some people swear by them others say they are a waste of money . I understand your feelings spending that money on an older car which you need and still not having it passed MOT and on road .Hope this helps .

Jock , just been thinking re cat. convertor , £250 is some price to be charged. You don't say what engine is in your car .If you go here and put in your car details you will see what I mean .
