Suddenly without warning stopped at lights the car went into "Neutral" showing on the dash while Stick was in Auto, this happened twice before the car went into neutral while actually driving. Realising the danger of this, managed to get to my Repair man who tells me the "Repair Needed" sign has indicated a problem with Gearbox selectors/ managment?
He has advised me that the parts plus VAT could exceed the value of the car.
Had the car 12 months purchased at 31k with full service history, now at 39k I am looking at possibly taking a large loss either way, to repair or not to repair that is the question.

You should get it scanned to see what fault codes show . Also might be worthwhile getting a second opinion from an independant auto gearbox specialist as it could POSSIBLY be a smaller , known , common fault .

Might be the next avenue to go down, although I believe that a least one fault code did show up. But a second opinion is always worth trying...thanks

A lot of faults with todays auto boxes are often down to external actuators / switches as opposed to internal faults , so worth a check .
