Suddenly while driving warning lights come on I stop and after a few goes it starts and seems ok. This has now developed into dropping down to 1st gear which is terrifying when you are driving, once again stop, leave for a while then it starts and runs ok. Noticed a leak from the battery, which has now been replaced not sure if this caused the problem.

The battery does slightly worry me,
If the alternator was/is overcharging it "could" cause the split and maybe your faults.
So I'd get the charging system checked out for overcharging.

Leak from battery hasn't got on any wiring / electrics ? Leak from battery could also cause a weak cell which may lead to problems , especially if alternator has to work overtime to keep up .As suggested , worth getting it checked out also .
