Burning smell whilst driving

The car is driving well however today there has been a smell of burning whilst driving but no other problem other than the smell?

You dont say what engine in car .Could be the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) regenerating if applicable which is normal. Probably explains in handbook .

Advise you get your car checked by a competent garage,as it could be any number of thing,s ,even if just for peace of mind in case something is binding on or rubbing against something.

You haven't run over any plastic bags ? Have had that often when they stick and melt on exhaust .
