Steering rack failure

Only had our car for 3 years and is now out of warranty. They are asking for 18,00 to repair it. We have asked the manufacturers to check if it is a known fault and they say they are going to check.We have been advised by lots of experts to not pay this as there is no way the steering rack should have failed when car is only 3 yrs old. need some advice please.

Provided it has not done exceptional mileage and been serviced on schedule , get on to Peugeot customer services and see if they will at least make a contribution or make an abnormal warranty claim as a company gesture on the repair .

What is the actual fault with the rack ? What is the cost ? not sure what 18,00 is .

Sorry, it will cost 1,800. not yet sure what is wrong with the rack until Peugeot have investigated today, but it was saying power steering failure on the dashboard and the peugeot garage where we bought the car have said the steering rack has failed.

does the steering still work and is it just the warning light that has come on assume dealer has checked wireing to rack motor and any earth leads and scanned system if they wont pay or contribute to repairs have you thought about fitting a second hand rack will be a lot cheaper for you

That seems to be the normal price for Peugeot dealers replacing the rack , but get on to Peugeot as suggested .You can get a recon unit from the likes of BBA Reman which I'm sure will be a lot cheaper , could give them a ring for a price .This link shows rack .
