When turning ignition key,there is just a small whirring,then on second or sometimes third attempt engine starts ok???

Check battery terminals and all earths . Check starter motor connections / wiring . If all o.k , may be faulty starter motor or pinion drive not sliding correctly due to dirt / clutch dust and needing cleaned .
