2001 Peugeot 106 clutch seems to be either on or off

On my sons 106, the transition of the pedal between the clutch being dis-engaged and engaged is tiny.

I have been driving for 25 years and I find it difficult to pull off without stalling.

Any ideas what may cuse this and how I may put it right?

If it has a cable with auto adjustment , could be that .

I can adjust the cable and move the biting point up and down the pedals travel but this dosen't effect the amount of travel I get between dis-engaged and engaged.
