Car: Peugeot 106
Year: 1997

THE CAR HAS 55,000 ON THE CLOCK AND HAS STARTED TO SLIP AND STRUGGLE TO PICK UP SPEED AND CHANGE GEAR ESPECIALLY GOING UP HILLS.THINK IT MAY BE THE BRAKE BANDS SLIPPING.NOT SURE WHAT TYPE OF BOX IT IS AND ARE THE BANDS ADJUSTABLE EXTERNALLY OR INTERNALLY OR NOT AT ALL.HAVE CHECKED THE ATF AND THATS OK.OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE.

Not familar with that box but normal cause of your symptoms on other auto boxes I've done in the past was due to worn clutch packs or oil pressure probs. ,rather than brake bands .There are other external factors that can affect trans. but really needs to be checked by an auto. gearbox specialist or dealer .This is an example from another forum on the same car(different fault from yours )which confirms the difficulties diagnosing without the right equipment / diagnostics .

auto box problems are quite common I will need to confirm vehicle model and how old etc but it sounds as though its the al4 box, if/when the the tramsmission does not up shift and locks in 3rd this is the ecu adopting a limmited operation strategy (also known as downgraded mode) this is because the ecu sees a problem and gives this limited function get you home stategy, normally with al4 the problem is associated with internal oil pressure but not always about just topping up. the oil pressure figures can only be looking at using the peogeot diagnostic tool or somthing similar,
in answer to your question the level is topped up through the breather on the top of the box near the reverse light "switch" ( noware near the tailgate )
Also you cant just chuck some oil in the box needs to be at least 65 degrees temp in park with the level tube center bolt removed ( under the box)
In adition if your box turns out to have internal oil pressure problems then it is fixable providing there is no other major issues in there.
Hope this helps
