1998 Peugeot 106 hard to get in gear

JUST BOUGHT THE CAR AND HAVE REALISED ITS SOMETIMES HARD TO GET IN 1ST AND 3RD GEAR 2 4 AND 5 THERES NO PROBLEMS. WHEN IT DONT GO IN 1 AND 3 I HAVE TO GIVE IT A SHOVE AND IT MAKES A CRUNCHING NOISE WHAT COULD BE WRONG?

Have you checked the gearbox oil level? Also what does the clutch feel like? Is it heavy or light to use?
My theory is the gearbox has an internal fault within the syncro unit itself. From memory the gears your having problems with are on the same shaft. Hope this helps a little.
