Speedo broken - cable fine. sender been replaced and stil not working

the speedometre in my car stopped working.
iv had two mechanics look it over. the speedo cable is fine and we replaced the speedo sensor. and the needle is still eratic.
it shows 0 most times then randomly springs round the dial to something unrealistic and hovers at different speeds before dropping again.
HELP!

some of the french gearboxes take the speedo drive from a plastic gear pushed on to the diff. if so on yours have one of those mechanics remove the driveshaft and the housing can be unbolted on the diff allowing replacement/inspection of the plastic drive. it can easily become damaged if the driveshaft has been removed and re-fitted eg during clutch job
