When I turn the ignition off and remove the key,my fuel guage does not go back down to empty,why is this

If it was going down previously , sounds like it may be the tank unit float unit sticking .Sometimes filling up tank may clear it or banging tank from below .

Forgot to add , MAY be faulty tank unit also .
