Engine cutting out from cold start

1996 Peugeot 106 1.5XND
Car: Peugeot 106
Year: 1996
Variant: 1.5XND
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My 106 has developed a problem, when attempting to start the car when the engine is cold it often just cuts out after a few seconds, once this happens it can take 5 - 20 attempts to get it going again. At idle the engine appears to run quite roughly but once warm everything is fine apart from slight hesitation or lag when accelerating (which may not be connected).
