2005 Peugeot 1007 chuffing when cold

this is not my car but have looked at it
the engine has started to make a chuff chuff noise while the engine is cold, have also seen ( exhust? ) gas which appears on right as you look at engine
not sure were it is coming from but is intermittant
when engine warms up it seams to stop, ant idears thanks

Checked exhaust manifold for tightness , leaks or cracks ?
