2007 Peugeot 1007 gear box fault

When selecting reverse gear, car doesn't move for a few seconds then "jumps" backwards, then doesnt reverse at all and states "gearbox fault" on dash. Any tips?

If automatic transmission , it may be low on oil . Possibly changing MAY help and often cures a lot of problems
