Sliding passenger door jammed

Hi I have just acquired a 1007 and have a problem that the sliding door has jammed on the passenger side. Ive changed the actuator and short circuited the petrol flap reed valve so its neither of these "usual suspects" It would appear to be that the catch has caught although it does seem to make the right noises when we pull the cable to activate it but its not releasing to give us the option to manually open the door.
Has any one else had this problem and is there any tricks to open the door short of cutting an access hole in the inner side and knocking the rear of the catch off to release it???
Thanks

make sure the little plasticpad is present which makes contact with the door open switch at the bottom of the door
