Sound of high rev - but dial says rev normal

2008 Peugeot 1007 1.4se
Car: Peugeot 1007
Year: 2008
Variant: 1.4se
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
The problem started last week.
If I go above 2nd gear the cars sounds like the rev count is 5000+. But the rev counter dial shows it to be a normal 2000ish level.
The car's performance is the same as always, some power level, same fuel efficency....just a very noisy car after 2nd gear.
Checked all oil / liquids levels and they are fine. Car will be due for next service in 4 months - only done 16k in 3.5 years.

sounds like a fault with the second gear, which means either repairing or replacing the gear box, which can be expensive both ways.

To clarify the car doesn't sound too bad when driven in 1st and 2nd gear, but drive in 3rd-5th and the car sounds really noisy. It doesn't feel like a gear box issue, the noise is in the engine compartment whilst driving.

check the gear oil level, it may be low. is it just as noisy when you rev it up in nuetral. check for exhaust leaks.
