Exhaust coughing and blowing out smoke!

Title says it all really..
It has started blowing smoke intermittently out of the exhaust, and is now coughing a bit... i recently put some oil in, so maybe its down to that, or my use of the car has reduced from 40 miles per day to hardly even use it at all..
any help or ideas would be gratefully received. Cheers

check that you havnt over filled the engine oil as this will lead to loss of power and smoking engine if you have over filled it then the oil is getting past the rings and being burnt if this is so then you would need to replace the rings that would require a strip down and rebuild unfortanatly also check the engine breather pipes are clear and free from any debris
